Byron’s latest project ‘ODYSSEY’ explores the possibilities when combining a traditional string quartet arrangement, together with piano, cajon and tabla. After many tours and performances with flamenco ensembles around Australia, Byron has developed a strong passion for flamenco rhythms. He is using this knowledge to craft unique compositions inspired by flamenco palos, yet coloured with Latin and Jazz rhythms/harmonies, whilst staying true to his classical piano roots.
With this, the ‘Byron Mark Septet’ was formed – and is a powerful live ensemble, with members from all around the world.
PIANO/PERCUSSION: Byron Mark (Australia – Greek/Maltese/Croatian)
TABLA: Maharshi Raval (India)
CAJON/PERCUSSION: Giorgio Rojas (Peru)
VIOLINS: Anna Murakawa (Brazil) & Yuhki Mayne (Australia/Japan)
VIOLA: Marianne Yeomans (Australia)
CELLO: Damian de Boos-Smith (Italy/Australia).
Flamenco Guitar (special guest): Paco Lara (Spain)
Byron also invites special guest flamenco dancers to the stage during some performances. This is a real treat for the audience and is mesmerising to watch the connection between the dancer’s footwork and the rhythms and melodies from the ensemble. Byron regularly collaborates with dancers Chachy Penalver & Lauren Majarres (Sydney), and Roshanne Wijeyeratne (Adelaide).
To date, the Septet have performed successful sold-out concerts at the Annandale Creative Arts Centre, Foundry 616, Peach Black Gallery, and Mosman Art Gallery.
‘Odyssey’ will be officially released in June 2022, with two single releases from the album celebrated prior to June. The album will be accessible online, and a limited number of vinyl records will also be pressed and made available to audiences after concerts.
